Note this is a Sample Itinerary: Hotels and routes may change. You'll be emailed the final itinerary one month before departure, but even then we always leave space for the unexpected finds and last minute discoveries!

May 1-11, 2026
Join James Barrowman, Scottish historian, and Raven for a journey through Scotland with a focus on literary masters!

Itinerary

Scotland has inspired and produced many great writers and its rich literary heritage spans centuries. James and I have long dreamed of creating a tour that focuses on the life, times and works of some of these masters. The only problem was how to narrow it down to fit in a ten day tour. Maybe we'll save a few for later :)

Days 1-3: Our tour begins in Edinburgh, the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, and you'll see the city through its literary connections, both old and new. On other tours we may touch on some, but this time will be a deep dive. Time will be carefully curated to include walking tours, author talks, museum visits and music as well as free time to explore on your own. Our hotel home will be Radisson Blu.

Day 4-6: We'll head to the Borders to learn more about two of Scotland's most prominent writers; Walter Scott and James Hogg, and see this often overlooked beautiful and historical part of the country. Our journey will include Abbotsford House, Dryburgh Abbey which is the resting place of Walter Scott, The Great Tapestry of Scotland Museum, the village of Selkirk with Walter Scott's Courtroom and other locations mentioned in the famous Border Ballads. These were stories of local adventures, raids, fairies and ghosts that were sung instead of written. They were eventually documented by Walter Scott. Our hotel home will be Peebles Hotel & Spa.

Day 7-9: Next, we'll go west to lovely Ayrshire, birthplace of Robert Burns where we'll immerse ourselves into the life and times of this much beloved author. We'll visit Burns' Cottage and Museum, the Auld Kirk (the spooky church from Burns' poem Tam O'Shanter), Culzean Castle ( a stunning castle with lots of history and ghost stories!) and meander the western coastline.  Ayrshire has been the setting for many books and has a thriving Writer's Club. Music will round out your evenings and, of coures, we'll say goodbye to Ayrshire with a traditional Burns Supper.

Day 10: We journey back to Edinburgh for an afternoon of your own exploration before meeting once more to share toasts and memories and overnight in Edinburgh.

Day 11 Leave for the airport for those returning home.
