Seeking Thin Places in Scotland
with Phil & Stacey Oehler

This is a preliminary itinerary. A more detailed schedule will be sent to participants 30 days before travel. Even then, we leave space for unexpected finds and little surprises. Rest assured, for this tour, we will visit historic churches and cathedrals, meet with friends who are Presbyterian ministers and have a chance to attend worship services.

Join Phil & Stacey for a rich journey of history, music, laughter, stunning landscapes and connection. Scotland is known for its "thin places," where the boundary between the physical world and the spiritual realm is perceived as being especially permeable. Originating from Celtic and other traditions, thin places bring a heightened sense of peace and the feeling that heaven and earth are closer together. They can be sacred sites like holy wells or ancient churches, but they can also be ordinary places like mountains, seashores, or even personal, quiet moments where one feels a deeper connection to something holy. Come explore the sacred places of Scotland with us!

Itinerary

July 16-26, 2027

Days  1-3: Fly into Edinburgh, rest for awhile or meander the Royal Mile  before meeting for a group dinner. Our first three days and nights will  be spent in Edinburgh, seeing the sights around the gothic capital city of Scotland, including a walking tour around Old Town with a focus on religious history: the good, the bad and the holy :), and a guided tour of St. Giles Cathedral, where feisty Jenny Geddes famously threw her stool at the minister and sparked a riot.

We'll also visit nearby Rosslyn Chapel and Glen, the enigmatic Collegiate Church that holds so many mysteries. During our stay in the city, you may choose to meander through storybook neighborhoods and mysterious wynds and closes (narrow walking paths off of the streets) and hear some of the fascinating history that spans  generations. You'll have a chance to explore the Royal Mile, museums and  historical monuments while enjoying sights, sounds and tastes that are  sure to be memorable. In the evenings, we will gather for great Scottish music and perhaps sample a single malt or two. Our home in Edinburgh  will be the Radisson Blu Hotel in the City Centre.

Day  4-6: We travel to the coastal city of Oban, gateway to the islands. Oban is a bustling town with quaint shops, award winning seafood restaurants, stunning sunsets and great music. From there, we'll ferry to the Isle of Iona, historically significant as the cradle of Scottish Christianity after St. Columba arrived in 563 AD. You'll have free time to ferry to other islands if you choose or enjoy the coastal beauty of the city. Of course, we'll have music options at night.

Day 7-9: We travel to Dunkeld, the heart of Scotland, where we'll settle into this warm community whose Cathedral plays a leading role in Scotland's history. From this lovely area that inspired writers from Shakespeare to Robert Burns to Beatrix Potter, we will take short day trips and nature walks and visit a castle or two. In the evenings, we'll host some of our very favorite musicians and storytellers. Our three night home in  Dunkeld will be Tay House.

Day 10: After Sunday service at Dunkeld Cathedral, we travel back to Edinburgh for a final night and group dinner back where we started. Before saying our farewells, we'll share favorite memories and toast to friendships made.

Day 11: Flights home or onward journeys.

Did you know?

Our tours are different than most. We follow a model of Regenerative Tourism, meaning we strive to leave a place better than we found it. Tours are carefully curated to support Scottish communities and be mindful of areas that are overtouristed. You will be seeing Scotland with local guides and friends who show up to share music and stories. You will not be seeing this enchanting land through a coach window with quick stops. We take our time and a portion of every tour goes back to conservation efforts in the areas we visit. Thanks for supporting small businesses and community efforts around Scotland!
