Focus on Scotland: Photography Tour with Jonathan Byrd

Note: This is a sample itinerary. Locations and routes may slightly change. The detailed itinerary will be sent out 30 days before travel but even then, we leave space for unexpected finds and surprises.

July 16-26, 2027
We love these so much that we cannot stop doing them. Come find out why this is our fastest filling tour! Join Jonathan Byrd to explore the wilds of Scotland including Argyll & Bute, the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre peninsula with a creative eye! Will there be music, history, culture and camaraderie too? Why yes, there will be all the things.

This is an active tour. There are hikes that may have you scrambling a bit. Much of it will be mild, but there are less than a handful of walks that will be more strenuous.

Itinerary

You'll fly into Glasgow to arrive by the 15th. This night is on your own, but we'll help with accommodations. Our coach picks us up the next morning (July 16th) and our journey begins as we travel west into the elemental edge of Argyll, where the city quickly dissolves into sea lochs, forested hills, and salt-laden air. In Dunoon, your base for three nights, the Cowal Peninsula opens into a quiet world of ancient woodland, including one of Raven's favorite walks, otherworldly Puck's Glen. Walk beneath towering trees in Argyll Forest Park and watch shifting light move across the Holy Loch at dusk. This is a place of stillness and texture — moss, stone, tide, and sky — where red deer step from the treeline and the evenings close in with the scent of rain and pine.

Continue south into the long, tapering reach of Kintyre, where the land narrows and the Atlantic begins to dominate. Campbeltown, once and still a whisky capital, now feels like a frontier town at the edge of weather and sea. Over three nights, explore vast beaches at Machrihanish, sea cliffs alive with wind and seabirds, and the tidal crossing to Davaar Island when the sands permit. The horizons are immense here — restless water to the west, softer eastern shores looking toward Arran — and the changing skies create a drama that is both cinematic and deeply personal. This is Scotland stripped back: elemental, exposed, and unforgettable.

From Kintyre, cross the water to the Isle of Arran, often called “Scotland in miniature,” yet vast in spirit. For three nights, immerse yourself in granite peaks and heathered moorland, climbing into the wild northern hills where mountain goats cling to ridgelines and eagles circle high above Glen Rosa. Wander quiet beaches in the south, explore standing stones and coastal paths, and feel the Atlantic winds meet gentler Firth of Clyde tides. Your final night returns you to Glasgow, carrying the memory of sea spray, peat-dark hills, and open skies — a journey through Scotland’s raw western edge where nature remains the guiding force.
